LSS Will Come To You

Community Health and Wellness Education

According to the American Lung Association, asthma is one of the most common chronic diseases in the United States.

Asthma is a long-term lung condition that causes inflammation and swelling of the airways, which can make breathing difficult and interfere with a person’s daily activities.

In New York State (NYS), approximately one in ten children has asthma, affecting nearly half a million students. Children with asthma may be especially vulnerable to poor environmental conditions, including indoor and outdoor air pollutants that can trigger or worsen asthma symptoms during the school day. Unhealthy environmental conditions can also affect teachers, staff, parents, and other adults living with asthma.

Asthma is a significant health concern in Buffalo and Erie County, particularly in lower-income neighborhoods where residents may experience greater exposure to environmental and industrial pollutants. Buffalo has been identified as an area with persistently high rates of asthma, highlighting the need for asthma education, environmental awareness, prevention, and effective self-management strategies.
