Food As Medicine
Working To Create A Lasting Impact
A description of community needs and activities related to Food In Community (FnC).
Overview
The Food As Medicine (FAM) Program is a growing movement that recognizes food and nutrition as powerful tools for preventing, managing, and even reversing chronic disease. Highlighted at the 5th Annual Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus (BNMC) Food as Medicine Symposium — Embracing Health, Empowering Communities — this initiative brings together healthcare providers, community organizations, policymakers, and residents to improve health outcomes across Buffalo.
Food and diet-related illnesses remain leading causes of disease and disability in the United States. The Food As Medicine model responds by integrating:
Medically tailored meals
Fresh food prescriptions
Nutrition education
Culinary medicine demonstrations
Lifestyle medicine strategies
Community-based food access solutions
By connecting healthcare systems with food providers and educators, FAM transforms nutrition from an afterthought into a frontline health intervention.

Purpose
Buffalo faces significant health disparities tied to food insecurity, chronic disease, and limited access to fresh, affordable food. The FAM approach:
Reduces preventable hospital visits
Supports diabetes and heart disease management
Improves maternal and women’s health outcomes
Strengthens community food systems
Promotes culturally relevant, sustainable nutrition practices
Through collaboration with institutions such as the University at Buffalo Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and local healthcare leaders, the movement is expanding across Western New York.
